Procedures for Testing UN-Rated Bulk Bags

20 June 2023     Fibc Procedures for Testing UN-Rated Bulk Bags

Every bulk bag, commonly known as an FIBC or jumbo bag, undergoes rigorous performance testing. However, UN-approved bulk bags stand as the pinnacle of quality, designed to withstand the physical pressures exerted by potentially hazardous contents.

In this blog, we delve deeper into how these large bags comply with UN safety standards, ensuring safe handling and usage.

What Are UN FIBC Bags?

Industries dealing with chemicals, poisons, or flammable items rely on heavy-duty UN-certified packaging bags for secure storage and transportation. These bags must meet stringent testing criteria set by the UN to mitigate the risks associated with handling hazardous materials.

Testing Procedures for UN-Rated Bulk Bags

UN FIBC bags must pass a series of rigorous testing protocols to earn certification:

  • Top Lift Test: Hydraulic pressure is applied to the bag's contents to test its ability to withstand six times its safe working load for five consecutive minutes.
  • Stacking Test: Bags filled to the safe operating load undergo pressure equivalent to two similar bags for 24 hours to evaluate their load-bearing capacity.
  • Drop Test: Bags filled to the safe working load are dropped from specified heights to check for ruptures or content leakage.
  • Topple Test: Bags loaded to a safe level are placed on a platform progressively raised to simulate toppling without spillage.
  • Tear Test: The bag is loaded and subjected to a 100mm knife cut to assess its tear resistance without content spillage.
  • Vibration Test: Bags are placed on vibrating platforms for an hour to ensure stability without toppling or breakage.
  • Righting Test: After being loaded and knocked on its side, bags are examined for tears or damage before being set upright.

Ensuring Safety Standards for Bulk Storage

UN FIBC bags' compliance with these tests guarantees their reliability in storing and transporting hazardous materials, ensuring safety across industries.
